Thanks, I was worried it was a bit trite but the poem starts and ends on sort of the same idea (In the year of the return of despair; …mundanity/swallows their souls). It just seemed a bit…poetic…:)
I read it as the poem following through on its theme. :) And, yes, what is more poetic than a full circle.
On a more subjective level, I just really felt that quiet desperation in our times. And the wholesome connection between the older man and younger woman was a really nice touch.
