The Winter Sky
In winter when the nights seem long, And sunset comes too soon Orion's Belt glows triply bright He trails the bull across the bight The Pleiades in lasting flight From the starry Tauran rune In winter when the days are short And the sunrise seems so slow The Dog Star shines in vivid white Preceded far in to the night By Betelgeuse in reddish light And Procyon's lucent glow In winter though the nights seem long Their splendor I embrace For the winter sky at night is deep Sparkling suns across it sweep Their scintillance is mine to keep An incandescent grace

That’s unfortunate. I grew up in a rural area where the night sky was spectacular; also my grandfather was a merchant seaman whose livelihood was navigation by “sextant and almanac” (this was in the days before gps or even LORAN). He taught me all the stars and constellations.
It’s still a great joy of mine to sit and stare at the night sky; I understand it’s not everyone’s cup of tea though.
