That's freaking great. :) Reminds me of my neighbor growing up. After spending the day mowing my yard, Mr. Woods asked my father if I could mow his, too. This would make the whole process a two-day operation, doing mine and his. And it would likely become a regular thing. He told my dad he would be willing to pay me $5 for the lawn. He was old and needed the help, so I didn't mind that part of itβit was the mowing for two whole days I wasn't looking forward to. When I did his lawn the first time and got done, I knocked on his door to let him know. He asked me how much I wanted for it. I said, well, $5. He said, "that's... pretty skinny, wouldn't you say?" He laughed. The deal was, he always paid me $25: the fiver I'd show my dad if he ever asked, the $20 was for me also. Really generous of him and something I haven't forgotten.
that was GREAT, I thought about an auger from the start (ground was too hard for a hand held one Im sure), and I was wondering if you used concrete for the footing in the post holes? IDK maybe I missed that. We had a stretch of plastic fence put in alongside my yard about 2 yrs ago, maybe 25 ft, and it was $2500, horrible, but it came out nice. GREAT story, I really enjoyed the pace, and details. I've done plenty of labor too, maybe not THAT much, but I know what it means to bust my ass too. Nice job Ernie..
Thanks! Yeah, concrete on the corner posts and then one post every 6 or 8 posts (48 feet to 64 feet) as braces. The rest were just in the dirt. In the wire fence it was a corner H brace (concrete) and a running brace every roll.
I just put up a wooden privacy fence along our back property line (200+ feet) a year ago this month. Luckily I have an existing cyclone fence so I didnβt have to dig post holes!π It was still a lot of work.
I follow, yeah EVERYTHING is work these days, nothing like having the great energy of a younger version of yourself. I played football in the Bronx too, I came to camp late for my HS team, then had surgery, so I ended up in the sandlot league, we were about the best team in 1976
Gotta love someone with a tractor! I did a 20 x 32 enclosure a few Augusts back. I rented a gas auger which the hard ground just laughed at. Ended up digging with water, post hole digger and iron bar. Took a while. Can't EVEN imagine a whole stretch of fence! A farmer is the best friend. Great 'post', Erniet! πͺ΅

Nice!π
Some neighbors are just super at reading a situation!
Great story! There's always an easier way to do something hard. Also the first time I ever heard of a Mr. Coffee who could drill holes.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!π
Mr Coffee: Not all heroes wear capes.
Truth!π
You've got a great storytelling style! Very enjoyable to read.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
